About the Artists

The Dorian Consort held its premiere performance in 2021 with Harry Mulligan (oboe), Brit Schlude (cello), and Drew Vella (viola). “Dorian” is a musical term referring to “Dorian mode” - one of the harmonic “church modes” during the Renaissance period. For members of the ensemble it’s also a nod of appreciation to “The Picture of Dorian Gray” by Oscar Wilde. The word “Consort” was used in the Renaissance period to mean “a small group of musicians.” Founding members, Brit and Drew studied together between 2008-2012 at C.W. Post. While attending Post, they studied with Susan Deaver (flute), Maureen Hynes (cello), Heawon Kim (piano), Veronica Salas (viola), and Dale Stuckenbruck (violin), members of the faculty ensemble, the Pierrot Consort. As musicians and educators we want to honor and remember our own teachers and favorite musicians, which is why we’ve chosen to borrow the word “Consort” from this memory. We also value the flexibility the name gives our ensemble and plan to explore music written for any small group of musicians. As an ensemble we welcome members that share our goal to grow as musicians, while showing each other support, kindness, and acceptance.
